Hörtips für Spezialisten Ich wurde gebeten, für ein Book of Lists des englischen Verlages Rough Guides zwei kommentierte Top 10s – einmal von Dion, zum anderen Reefer-Songs – zusammenzustellen. Here they are:

DION

The King Of The NewYork(neu?) Streets: DION The best thing about New York,‘The Wanderer’: Dion di Mucci. Or, in the words of fan Lou Reed, introducing Dion into The Rock’n‘Roll Hall Of Fame in 1989: “Who could be hipper than Dion?” Not a question, a statement. Yo!

• And the night stood still – from Yo Frankie (Arista, 1989) Just reminiscing, remembering?, says Dion. Dave Edmunds, welshMAN Terry Williams and Patty Smyth did on Yo Frankie! with him. Do you?

• Book of dreams (Bruce Springfield) – from Deja Nu (Ace, 2000) Dion covered Dylan, Waits and some others, who regard him as their hero (his backing singers in one concert: Lou Reed, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon & Bill y Joel). Dylan: “He’s never lost it – his genius has never deserted him?”.

• Born to be with you – from Dion Box: King of New York Streets (The Right Stuff, 2000) A perfect ‘76 wall-of-sound-production by fellow New Yorker Phil Spector.

• Brooklyn Dodger – from Return of the Wanderer (Ace, 1978) Imagine: Manchester loosing United, like: Glacier selling the name to Swansea. Brooklyn lost the Dodgers and a 2 million city lost it?s sportsheros.

• No one knows from Presenting Dion & the Belmonts (Laurie, 1958) A Teenage angst classic, one of some heartbreakers he doowooped with the guys from Belmont Avenue. I can just see a young Brian Wilson humming along.

• Purple Haze from Dion (Laurie, 1968) ?We?re going to the same place, different expression? – was Jimi?s response to this folksy version of that acid-classic.

• The truth will set you free – from Inside Job (Dayspring, 1980) Dion crossing over from a Bronx-junkie to a catholic survivor. Swopping junk for God in 1968.

• Turn me loose – from A Tribute to Doc Pomus (Rhino Rec., 1995) Pomus wrote the song origiunally for Elvis, but then Fabian wrecked it. Dion wanted to do the song justice – and he did.

• The Wanderer – from LP Dion & the Belmonts, Live at the Madison Square Garden 1972 (Warner Brothers, 1973) For old time?s sake: a Bronx / Brooklyn sing-a-long, when the Wanderer & the Belmonts came back to perform their ?61 hit.

• You move me – from Dion ‘n‘ Little Kings: Live in New York (Ace, 2001) “I love a good rock‘n‘roll song, you know, cars, girls, music …?“ was Dions comment on this recording, “There is a beauty in simplicity“.

•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• REEFER SONGS

Smoking dope and singing about it didn?t start (or end) with the hippies. Strangely no british song made the list, but then no song of traditional cannabis-cultures as well.

Louis Armstrong: Muggles – from Dope & Glory, (Trikont, distributed in England by Klang Records) One of the most famous pre-hippie dopers stretching his notes. What a wonderful music-world he opened up.

Jamie Brockett: The U.S.S. Titanic Well, now we know why the drama happened: the capt?n took a toke. The finest 16 minutes of this Boston singer-songwriter of the mid-60s.

Big Bill Broonzy & Jean Brady: Knockin? myself out – from High & Low, {Trikont, distributed in England by Klang Records) One of the most recorded reefer-song of all time, as if folks were smoking Skunk 60 years ago

Ry Cooder & Buffy St. Marie: The Hashashins – from Performance Soundtrack, (Warner Brothers) A Jack Nitzsche song from the movie Performance, with Buffy on mouth-bow & help from Jack Nitzsche.

The Fugs: Marihuana – from The Fugs (LP 1968) A medival gregorian chant, celebrating the herb in dozens of languages. A global statement.

Nina Hagen Band: African Reggae – from unbehagen, (CBS, 1979) OK, this hymne to african dope is partly rapped in German, sung in English, with some yodeling thrown in – a powerful mix.

Ischen Impossible: Gruenzeugkristalle – from Dancehallfieber 3 CD (DHF Rec., Austria) An unbelievable fine first recording of 4 girls from Cologne. A real teenage-d?opera under 5 minutes.

Peter Rowan: Panama Red – from LP Peter Rowan, (Flying Fish Rec. 1978) Recorded solo by Peter, with ?Old & in the way?, by the New Riders and others. As long as the stuff is illegal, we should have more songs about dealers. (OK, let?s not forget Traffic?s ?Dealer, Dealer?).

Gertrude Michaels: Marahuana – from video-version of that old movie From the ‘30s musical ‘Murderer at the Vanities‘. Wonderfully re-recorded in the early 90s, but by whom?

Fats Waller: Vipers Drag – from Dope & Glory, (Trikont, distributed in England by Klang Records) “Dreamed about a reefer five feet long … the sky is high & so am I“ … Louis and Fats stand for all those 30s/40s musicians like Sidney Bechet, Mezz Mezzrow, Cab Reefer Man Calloway, who did more dope-songs than the hippies in the 60s.
